15th March 2019 – Yacht Club de Monaco

 

After a very successful Primo Cup-Trophée Credit Suisse in February, when 400-plus sailors from across Europe and even Brazil descended on Monaco to race, the one-design J/70 and Melges 20 fleets will be out on the water again this weekend in the Principality.

 

Some 50 boats and 200 sailors are set for the final straight of the 6th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series. These monthly regattas from October-March, organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in partnership with technical clothing supplier SLAM, are an opportunity for professional and amateur sailors to race all winter and prepare for the upcoming season.

 

Among the favourites in the J/70 fleet is Brazilian star Marcelo Ferreira, loyal team-mate of Torben Grael, two-time Olympic gold medallist and bronze medallist. All eyes will be on his crew on Mandachuva, flying th*allow the Brazilians to dictate terms.

 

There are several youth teams of future talents like from the southern league, from the YCM’s Sports Section and from the Youth Offshore Academy. Communication is going to be* key as the latter crew comprises an Italian, an Irishman, a Frenchman and a Monegasque! 

 

The first race starts at midday on Friday with spring-like conditions beneath sunny skies and a south-westerly in the forecast.
