Alvaro de Marichalar – Historic expedition around the world

An historic circumnavigation in honour of the early explorers

At midday on Thursday 7th November 2019, Alvaro de Marichalar, a Yacht Club de Monaco Explorer Club member, set off from the YCM Marina heading for Marseille on the next stage of his historic solo round the world expediton.

Having started on 10th August from Seville in Spain, Alvaro de Marichalar is on a mission to go round the world aboard his 3m craft Numancia in honour of the explorers Magellan and Elcano, who left Seville five centuries ago on the first circumnavigation in history. During a stopover in the Principality, he came to the Yacht Club de Monaco to talk about his challenge which is to promote discovery and adventure that enriches Man’s knowledge of our marine environment.

“Our oceans cover 70% of the planet, so it is vital we know, respect and love them. This expedition is to honour those men and women who sacrificed themselves to enhance scientific endeavour, the knowledge we have of our world,” said Alvaro de Marichalar.

This one-year expedition will take him to Malaga then Gibraltar, where the YCM-flagged explorer ship, M/Y Yersin, will join him and accompany him across the Atlantic to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. From there Alvaro heads south to Latin America where new adventures await the team.

Before Alvaro left the Principality, Monseigneur Michel Ange from the Chapelle de Carmes blessed the craft to protect the adventurer on his voyage.  There was loud applause from his family and the crowd that had gathered as Alvaro left the YCM Marina.

All the teams at the YCM wish him fair winds and following seas.
