5th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series

8 -10 December 2017 : Melges20 & J70 (Act III)

If all 50 teams hold their nerve, Act III of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series look set to be one at daggers drawn. Challengers have one goal on their minds: take down the peloton and shed some points before attacking the meetings scheduled for 2018.

Stars and regulars of this winter circuit, the J/70 and Melges 20 will be battling it out on the Monaco race area again in what looks like promising weather conditions, with a medium south-westerly wind forecast for the first day of racing.

Finesse at the helm

Impossible at this stage to predict who can unseat the supremacy of Art Tube led by the brilliant Valeria Kovalenko. The Russians have set the rules in the J/70s, winning the first two Acts of this fifth edition after making it onto the top step of the podium to win last season. They are in the lead over the Brazilians on Manda Chuva who make their grand return to the Principality this weekend. Mario Garcia and his team are on a brand-new J/70, set to take revenge on their Eastern European opponents.

The J/70 is an eclectic fleet with sailors from very different profiles and includes Jean-Baptiste Bernaz, Olympic Laser star of three Olympics and member of the French Sailing Team. The pros are joined by two amateur formations from the YCM’s Sports Section, one comprising four young Laser sailors. Pauline Lepoivre, Dylan Casini and Arnaud Postifferi will be pooling their experience to make their mark on Levant helmed by Jérémy Moutout. Recently crowned Laser Standard Mediterranean Champion this young YCM member is also a regular on high-level regatta circuits.

Transferring skills

In the Melges 20, the best sailors have their sights set on overturning the tables. Just a few months into his debut season in this class and Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda-Banca del Sempione) has got off to a flying start, winning the last Act. It seems nothing can stop this YCM member who made his mark last year in the J/70s with a superb 3rd place in the final ranking, just one year after he started sailing.

It all starts tomorrow Friday at 12 noon for the third act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, monthly regattas organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with technical clothing supplier SLAM, on the initiative of Valentin Zavadnikov.
