Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series 2019-2020 kicks off this weekend

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series – Act 1

Monaco Friday 8th November 2019 – There’s no let up for racers as Act 1 of the 2019-2020 Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series kicks off this weekend.

Alongside the Melges 20s, that have been in from the start thanks to Valentin Zavadnikov and took part in a warm-up race today, is the championship’s flagship J/70 class with some 30 boats here for Act 1 (7-10 November). The Principality boasts one of the largest fleets in the Mediterranean with 20 boats grouped in the J/70 Monaco Class Association.

The Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series offers monthly one-design regattas that attract teams from all over Europe to train in the Bay of Monaco, the highlight being the 36th Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse (6-9 February 2020).

This year’s fleet includes 16 nationalities with sailors from Spain, Turkey and Cyprus taking part for the first time. There are also three young teams in the J/70 mix sailing on Merci Coach, Mistral and Young Team Monaco, while Jehol is fielding an all-female crew.

Headlining this 8th edition is the Russian J/70 boat Art Tube skippered by Valeria Kovalenko, winner of the Series several times in the past, and YCM member Ludovico Fassitelli at the helm of Junda Banca del Sempione in the Melges 20, who finished 6th in the Worlds at Torquay in England.

As Monaco is set to host the J/70 World Championship, 18-23 October 2021, the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series should prove to be an ideal training base.

Programme this weekend

Saturday 9th November: 11.00am: First warning signal

Sunday 10th November: 11.00am: First warning signal

After racing: Prize-giving

Note: Act 1 part of J/70 Med Cup

New this year, Act 1 and Act V of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series are part of the J/70 Med Cup, a new circuit in the Mediterranean comprising six Acts, an initiative of the three national Class Associations, the Italian, Monegasque and French.
