Monaco Optimist Team Race

The 9th Monaco Optimist Team Race, organised with the support of FxPro, Eventica, Fon and clothing supplier SLAM, kicked off today at the foot of the Rock. At 12 noon amidst yachts in the main harbour the racing got underway for 64 under-14s taking part in this international match racing event.

The Finns are here again alongside national teams from Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands and Austria, the level is high for the 16 teams from 16 nations in competition.  Divided into several rounds, the teams completed 18 matches today. The Swedes from KSSS have seized top spot in their group, as have the Irish from Crookhaven Harbour Sailing Club and the Monegasques. Unfazed and constantly in contact, Luca Frederiksen, Mathieu Choquet, François Lamy and Leonardo Bonelli from the YCM’s Sports Section won all their matches, which augurs well for the follow-up.

A reminder that before the main event, teams from Uruguay, Russia, Croatia and Monaco made the most of an International Clinic run by World Sailing match race specialist Chris Atkins. “They are incredibly motivated and very competitive. What’s great about this type of event is to see the youngsters leave as better racers than when they arrived,” was his comment.

Rendezvous tomorrow Friday at 9.00am when races start again.
