Monaco Optimist Team Race

12-15 January 2017

As is now the tradition at the Yacht Club de Monaco, the start of the year heralds a packed programme for this one-design winter training base which this weekend hosts 240 sailors across the generations. The youngest of them open the ball tomorrow (Thursday 12th January) with the team-match-race format, Monaco Optimist Team Race. On Friday, their elders enter the fray in the Melges 20, J/70 and M32 classes for the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series.

For the seventh consecutive year, 64 international sailors under the age of 14 have descended on Monaco to compete in this original regatta, organised with support from FxPro, Eventica and clothing supplier SLAM. In total 16 teams, mainly from Northern Europe, will be out on the water after the Opening Ceremony at 10.00am on Thursday.

Among newcomers to this event are teams from the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) and Royal Danish Yacht Club. Meanwhile, an epic duel between the two Swiss teams is promised, as the youngsters from Société Nautique de Genève defend their title against arch rivals from the Gstaad Yacht Club, winners of previous years.

Among these international teams, Andrea Tortella, Logan Viciana, Luca Frederiksen and Mathieu Choquet are representing the YCM, and the level is high. But more importantly, this event is an opportunity for everyone to meet others of the same age, who are equally passionate about sailing, around shared values of friendship, fraternity and solidarity.
